Orthoses, braces, and supports designed for the shoulder, arm, elbow, wrist, and hand are referred to as upper extremity orthoses. These can be used for a variety of purposes, from stabilisation to immobilisation, and fall under one of three main categories: soft upper extremity supports, positional upper extremity supports, or orthosis of upper extremity fractures.

Upper Extremity Soft Supports : These orthoses, also referred to as soft products, contain braces that are made from neoprene, cloth, and fabric and can be strengthened for extra protection with metal / plastic stays.

Upper Extremity Positional Supports : These orthoses are intended to position the upper extremity, including the hand, arm and shoulder, in order to avoid unnecessary contractures, maintain proper balance, and provide physical and occupational therapy with a controlled range of motion.

Fracture Orthoses : The type of fracture and the position decide the suitable mode of orthosis. It is also normal to stabilise above and below the affected area to decrease excessive movement at the fracture site if the fracture site is near a joint.
